The kingdom of heaven is like a King Who prepared a wedding banquet for his Son
A bit later in this chapter of Matthew’s gospel, a Pharisee approaches Jesus to test Him, not love him. (v36)

I reckon most of us know what I’m talking about when I refer to ‘that’ feeling when you get on the treadmill for the first time since your last gym visit….6 months before. Or when you pick up the dumb-bell you were once lifting and now can barely move – that feeling of being flabby or feeble or both.
Spiritually we can can get flabby and feeble and, in the world of exercise physiology, this is explained by the term atrophy – the wasting away of muscle fibres leaving us weaker, joints unstable, slower in metabolism, unsettled in sleeping and, interestingly, more prone to gain unhealthy weight also known as adiposity.

Four of us went to watch Fulham v Liverpool FC last night. London was squally and freezing cold as we sat in the Hammersmith end wondering if Liverpool were going to continue to challenge for their first League Title since 1989/90.

The Firebrand Notes blog has been going for seven years now and has been morphing into a different form in the last year or so. But it’s far from complete and in one sense it never will be.
I thought it would be a good way of marking its 7th anniversary occasion by having a go at the WordPress Daily Post 1’000 word challenge: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/inspiration-images-1000-words/
Here’s my short entry for the relaxation image provided by Cheri Lucas Rowlands from the Daily Post Challenge this week:-

The only way I have ever found of getting/keeping fit is to consistently just do it. Consistency is key. Get a quality Fitness Instructor and a programme and start a new lifestyle. And stick at it.

Within these first three weeks of 2014 we have been following a Daniel Fast to achieve a few things:
1) Detox from the poor nutrition running up to and during the festive season &
2) Lose a few vanity pounds but primarily
3) Know a closer-felt proximity to Jesus
The overwhelming reason for doing any Christian fast is homesickness – homesickness for heaven and homesickness for Jesus. When Jesus was asked in Mark 2 as to why His disciples were not fasting, He points John’s disciples and the Pharisees (who’d asked) to the day when the Bridegroom would be taken from them (us, the church) and when we’d then fast. We fast because we miss Jesus and we long to be sensitised to His presence and His voice. (Have a look at an article I wrote a few years ago here).
One of the sweetest highlights in pastoral ministry I’ve experienced thus far was when I was stood next to one of my best friends on the front row of the church we were leading together at the time. Like in any church, there were seemingly thousands of things/responsibilities/behind-the-scenes situations that were threatening to kidnap my simple worship and devotion.
I was stood wrestling with a few things, including fear, my eyes closed, as I tried to push in to his presence. I was trying. I’m still trying today, with a whole bunch of things.Continue reading “Out of the Mouths of Babes”
For those of you wanting to shed some pounds in 2014 or to bulk up and get stronger – here are my best words of advice from over 14 years of working in exercise and health. Happy sweating!
In my professional role as an NHS Exercise Practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of helping over 6000 patients one on one in the last 6 years to: improve their general health, lose weight, recover from open-heart surgery, reverse chronic metabolic diseases like diabetes, overcome depression and start walking again from life-threatening morbid obesity – the list goes on and on.
During that time I’ve met people from virtually every walk of life, most of whom wanted to lose weight and improve their health through physical activity.
Here’s some info for you if you are currently unhappy with your health/weight and how you might make that all-important move from being inactive to even moderately active. If you have any questions please leave them in the comments box and I’ll reply asap, otherwise I advise asking your GP about GP Exercise Referral/Prescription services in your area.
