Great Doors

If you look at the very end of 1 Corinthians 16, you’ll read Paul describing a spiritual reality that I believe is at the very heart of effective Christian ministry, fruitful discipleship and that is also one of the most difficult lessons to learn as we mature in faith as ‘ordinary’ men and women.

Grab a coffee or can of diet Coke or a Twix or something; I think it deserves the spotlight for 5 minutes:

The Father Never Lies

The world reminds you every day that “The camera never lies” But The Father reminds you every day that “The Father never lies” I’m reminded that there is a father of lies but assured that the Father doesn’t ever lie. I saw a man today crippled by the fear of what the camera said, byContinue reading “The Father Never Lies”

Soul Speak

I was watching Match of the Day last night (MOTD) which, for anyone reading this from outside the UK, is a staple part of most football-loving chap’s Saturday evening.  In the match between my beloved Liverpool FC and West Ham United, the referee had a mare: he wrongly sent off two players, one from eachContinue reading “Soul Speak”

Exodus: Gods and Kings

A close and legenadary Film Director friend of mine once inspired me to think about the difference between movies and films: a movie is often for popping pop-corn, action, explosions, the BIG SCREEN; whereas a film can be all of those things but still be in a league of its own as an artistic creationContinue reading “Exodus: Gods and Kings”

Kneeling, Praying, Sailing, Walking, Dying

Acts 21 is a microcosm of community, discipleship, glory and suffering: Paul reaches the point where he knew he wouldn’t see his beloved family again and that this final voyage from Tyre to Caesarea was unto final suffering, imprisonmmet and death. Imagine the scene as, with profuse tears, Paul’s missional community kneels together on theContinue reading “Kneeling, Praying, Sailing, Walking, Dying”

Care Scotland

Spending time with my friend @theoweir at @carescot has been a breath of fresh air in recent months. Stuart heads up the Scottish arm of Care, based in Glasgow. In working with these guys, I have had my eyes opened to the valuable difference being made in parliament by Christians who want to influence ourContinue reading “Care Scotland”

Fight as Though For Yourself

A friend loves at all times,     and a brother is born for adversity.  – Proverbs 17:17 – The bible says this is what friends do and that this is what brothers are born for. Q) Is this your experience? A) Probably not…at least, probably not entirely. It’s more likely that you have been hurt byContinue reading “Fight as Though For Yourself”

Isaiah, Fatboy Slim & the Rhythms of Rave (Prayer)

“Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” is the mantra that you’ll hear if you tune in to Fatboy Slim’s 2013 hit on YouTube, of the same title, which, by the way, has approaching 6 million views. Either that, or you take yourself along to your local gym and do a Les Mill’s BodyPump class, and the currentContinue reading “Isaiah, Fatboy Slim & the Rhythms of Rave (Prayer)”

Hitting Unsubscribe

The Bible tells us to ‘take captive every thought that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor.10:5) Do you ever look at your email inbox and ignore a whole bunch of emails because they’re not important to you – you can tell by looking at theContinue reading “Hitting Unsubscribe”
