What is THE critical moment in ‘becoming a Christian’? Is it when we believe, when we trust, when we repent? NO. The only answer is that it is when the LORD God almighty touches our hearts in sheer grace and mercy to awaken us to the need of salvation. A. W. Tozer called this, “Prevenient Drawing” — (i.e. God’s sovereign work in our hearts to believe while we were yet DEAD in trespasses and sin).
Salvation belongs to the LORD; it is His work, His doing, His glory. We have no merit in and of ourselves.
And the first indication of this being a work truly of His Spirit in us…? Joyful surrender and submission to the Word of Christ.
Why then do so many sincere people (claiming to be Christian disciples) evidently think that it is perfectly OK to believe whatever they’ve been told (or whatever they want) and still be saved?
This is precisely why the overwhelming emphasis of the prophets, the apostles and the Lord Jesus Himself is to watch/guard against deception.
