Radical Preparation for the Return of Christ

  1. Very classy video mate and wonderful track. Three initial thoughts to throw in. 1) I was really struck reading the biography of John Paton, missionary to the New Hebrides (available on Internet Archive or see the short book by Piper on Desiring God) how he had the deepest experience of the presence of Christ at exactly the moments of greatest danger, surrounded by cannibals, on the verge of martyrdom and eternity – the sweetest communion with Christ came in knowing him in his sufferings (Phil. 3:10); 2) I was also very moved by a sermon on Luke 24 recently talking about the ‘heart burn’ the guys on the road had as Jesus opened the Scriptures for them and showed them himself on every page – the conclusion was you are never closer to Jesus than when you have his Word open before you and you’re seeing his glorious face shining from those pages; 3) I like the way the rain starts hammering against the windows at the end of your discussion on the presence video – like Creation itself is coming in on the conversation and telling us of Christ the Word (Isaiah 55:10-11).

    1. Thank you, Andy. You’re comments always lead to great conversations – proper blogging!

      1) What an amazing thought – His presence in the midst of danger as opposed to devotional ‘bliss’ or comfort. I revel in the fact that it is the literal presence of Jesus in these moments that we can put our hope in…He is actually with us as we face challenges, persecutions, temptations. i wonder how Jim Elliot was comforted in his ordeal.
      2) I’m not sure whether I prefer this thought or the first one – He is very near, nearer than we know. Acts 17:27
      3) This was truly amazing mate. I was genuinely aware of that at the time – His presence as Steve talked about the simplicity of a son knowing their Father, the created their Creator – amazing! Steve obviously had a humble brag at the time that he was a son of thunder!

      1. Re. Jim Elliot – I need to go back and read his biography – which is very tellingly titled “The Shadow of the Almighty”. Surely that is where we dwell in Christ – whether or not we are aware of it.
